Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore told a church crowd on Sunday that the U.S. Supreme Court “destroyed the institution of God” by legalizing same-sex marriage. The notoriously Bible-thumping judge passed blame and forgave the justices by adding that their legal justifications were influenced by “Satan,” reports AL.com. Moore, who made national news when he ordered the state’s probate judges to withhold same-sex marriage licenses in violation of a federal judge’s decision, addressed a congregation of about 150 people at Magnolia Springs Baptist Church in Theodore.
“How do they come out now and say that marriage, which is ordained by God, doesn’t mean what it’s always meant, between a man and woman?” Moore said. “Not between two men, two women, or three women and one man.” Moore is allowing his religion to guide his legal decisions. This man is a Supreme Court Justice, his job is to enforce the rulings of the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court has declared same-sex marriage federally recognized. He is just one of many law enforcers disobeying orders in regards to LGBTQ rights. He joins Judge James R. DePiazza of Texas who is making same-sex couples sign a waiver denoting his objection to their marriage.
Moore previously stated that governors could disregard the court’s decision in their states, saying, “If the decision contradicts the Constitution, then it is not law. And if it is not a law, then you don’t have to obey it.” In his speech Moore went on to bash same-sex marriage. “See, they don’t have a definition. They’ve just destroyed the institution of God,” he went on to add. “Despite what they think, it’s not their doing. Satan drives us. He’s out there destroying everything God created including us as human beings.”
What would happen if this was common professional action. Can traffic cops not direct some motorists because they don’t like mustangs? Will Doctors stop performing surgery for patients whom have gunshot wounds because they object to violence? This is exactly what conservatives want, backing bills that could effectively prevent doctors from treating gay patients based on religious objection.
In June, after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges ruling legalized same-sex marriages across the country, Moore also recused himself from another state court order that he said delays the decision’s implementation in Alabama. According to Al.com, Moore stuck around after the church meeting, signing autographs and hawking copies of his book titled “So Help Me God,” for $20 a pop.
Moore did get one thing right in his speech though, “Satan drives us” or at least those who are full of greed and pride. Someone should tell Moore greed is one of the seven deadly sins. So is pride coincidentally, both of which he is clearly guilty of, signing autographs and selling copies of his book using God for profit. He seems to take a clear stance with his religious views on the subject of gay marriage but refuses to acknowledge them when there is fame and fortune to be had. God has a message for you Justice Moore:
Psalm 10:3 “For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.”
Psalm 10:4 “In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, There is no God.”
