The Republican Party establishment really, really hates Donald Trump and the closer we get to the election the more vocal they are being about it. In fact, the party is so fed up with the GOP nominee that they are telling the Republican National Committee to stop wasting their money on him. Apparently, 120 Republicans signed a letter demanding the RNC cut Trump off and plan on delivering it to Chairman Reince Priebus on Tuesday. They claim that the money the RNC is spending on Trump should go to the down-ticket candidates that are being hurt by the billionaire’s constant screw ups:
Given the catastrophic impact that Donald Trump’s losing presidential campaign will have on down-ballot Senate and House races, we urge you to immediately suspend all discretionary RNC support for Trump and focus the entirety of the RNC’s available resources on preserving the GOP’s congressional majorities.
According to CBS News, the demand letter was signed by Republicans ” who have served in every GOP administration since President Ronald Reagan, nine advisers on the last nine GOP presidential campaigns as well as former congressional aides.” Two sitting congressmen — Reps. Reid Ribble, Wisconsin and Scott Rigell, R-Virginia — and 27 former RNC staffers have also signed it.
We believe that Donald Trump’s divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence, and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide, and only the immediate shift of all available RNC resources to vulnerable Senate and House races will prevent the GOP from drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck,” the letter says.
This is an unprecedented move by the right. Never in modern politics has a party so despised their nominee. In 2012, Mitt Romney wasn’t super popular with some of the people in his party but when he was nominated at the RNC that year those people fell in line and began supporting him. Trump’s candidacy is nothing like that. While high-ranking Republicans like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have jumped aboard the Trump train, conservatives like the former president Bush (Jr and Sr), the Reagan family and many other just can’t do it. They seem to understand that Donald is going to hurt their party for years to come and they don’t want anything to do with his nonsense. Unfortunately for them, the damage has already been done.
Donald Trump rubbed the lamp and the racist, xenophobic, bigoted Republican genie emerged. Just like in the movie Aladdin, Trump looked at his GOP genie and said “I wish you were free,” and now the party will never be able to put it back in the bottle. The voters in this country now know with 100% certainty what the Republican Party believes in and it will take years for them to repair the damage — if they even can.
