These days, it’s pretty hard not to turn on the news and see where some cop has shot and killed a black person. What is even more infuriating is that it is almost always caught on tape, and it’s a pretty open and shut case of excessive force. That matters not, though; the cops always get off. Why? Because in America, black lives don’t matter to law enforcement. Case in point – Philando Castile’s cop shooter was just acquitted of all charges, even the ones related endangering the welfare of a child, when Castile’s girlfriend’s four-year-old daughter was in the back seat of the car. He literally died in front of a child due to a broken tail light. We can only hope she doesn’t remember much of this and gets the therapy she most certainly will need.
Now, rewind just a bit to that infamous standoff between a bunch of white domestic terrorists who took over a federal building. Led by the likes of the sons of Cliven Bundy – the rancher who refuses to pay grazing fees – they were allowed to stay, armed and ready to mow down federal agents at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. In the end, they were arrested without incident for the most part, but one of the idiots occupying the reserve, LaVoy Finicum, had insisted he’d die before he let the law make him leave. An FBI agent shot him. It has now come to light that the shooting of Robert “LaVoy” Finicum has been the subject of an investigation for more than a year.
Now, it seems that the FBI agent involved in Finicum’s death is facing an indictment. Think about that. This guy shot a literal domestic terrorist, and he is facing an indictment for doing his job. This is when an officer of the law is SUPPOSED to discharge a weapon – not because someone has a broken tail light or is running away from the officer and poses no threat.
It is unclear whose bullets it was that killed the domestic terrorist, but goddammit, they are determined to find out. The agent who shot at Finicum apparently is, at this point, being investigated for possibly lying about the events that led up to the demise of a man who was breaking federal laws into a million pieces.
This is the very definition of white privilege, people. It really is. If those people at that wildlife reserve had been black, Latino, or of Middle Eastern descent, they’d have been dead before they got there.
So, next time someone tells you white privilege isn’t a thing, use this as an example and enlighten them. It literally means the difference between life and death to everyday Americans on a regular basis.
