White House Transcripts Show That Trump Tried To Bully Mexican President Into Saying He’d Pay For The Wall

In the early days of the Trump White House, Americans were horrified to learn that Trump was rude to our allies, especially Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto regarding the ridiculous wall that Trump has vowed to build on the southern border. Now, new transcripts have emerged to show just how awful that phone call was.

Apparently, Trump demanded that President Pena Nieto stop publicly saying that Mexico would not pay for the wall. According to the transcripts obtained by the Washington Post, Trump said to the President of Mexico regarding his repeated assertions that Mexico will not be paying for the wall:

You cannot say that to the press.”

Even more stunning is the fact that behind closed doors, Trump admitted to Pena Nieto that he knew that money for the wall had to come from somewhere else, that it “will work out in the formula somehow.” Trump also threatened to cut off contact with America’s neighbor and one of our closest allies if President Pena Nieto didn’t stop telling the media that there would no wall payments from Mexico:

If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that.”

Trump then went on to admit that the wall is not important at all, but for political purposes he had to have it built:

The least important thing we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important.”

Here is the full transcript of that relevant portion, via the Washington Post:

To solve that problem, Trump pressured Peña Nieto to suppress the issue. When pressed on who would pay for the wall, “We should both say, ‘We will work it out.’ It will work out in the formula somehow,” Trump said. “As opposed to you saying, ‘We will not pay,’ and me saying, ‘We will not pay.’ ”

Peña Nieto resisted, saying that Trump’s repeated threats had placed “a very big mark on our back, Mr. President.” He warned that “my position has been and will continue to be very firm, saying that Mexico cannot pay for the wall.”

Trump objected: “But you cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that, and I cannot live with that.”

This is really damning stuff. Trump now is openly admitting that he punked his supporters on the wall, and now he has backed himself into a corner. The result is his deeply offending the President of Mexico and damaging America’s relationship with one of our closest allies.

This is outrageous, and the world is laughing at us. Trump is literally going to make sure that America has no real friends left when he’s done.
