The chaos of Donald Trump’s administration earned a complete smackdown from presidential historian Douglas Brinkley on Sunday.
After a week in which Trump fired White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and ousted Chief ofSstaff Reince Priebus after hiring Wall Street loudmouth Anthony Scaramucci as his communications director and personal ass-kisser, all while his efforts to repeal Obamacare went down in flames and North Korea fired missiles that can reach the United States, CNN brought the Rice University professor on to discuss it.
During the appearance, Brinkley tore into Trump and declared him “unfit for command,” a remark that seemed to surprise Brian Stelter so much that he asked him to confirm what he just said.
“It’s in utter disarray,” Brinkley said of Trump’s White House. “And you can’t really compartmentalize everything, because it’s all morphed together as Donald Trump unfit for command in my opinion.”
“Let me be clear, you just said he’s unfit for command?” Stelter asked.
Brinkley then explained.
“I think so. I think when you have a White House communications director that uses the kind of foul language that he does against fellow employees of the federal government, and makes threats the way that he did and that’s supposed to be your solution to the United States’s way they’re going to communicate with the world, it means Donald Trump picked the wrong person to be his communications director. He has a White House that’s leaking like crazy. As just mentioned there are people ready to whistle blow. He thinks that you can govern by chaos, and it’s not working.”
Brinkley went on to blast Trump for playing “reality TV wrestling games” in the White House while North Korea gets more aggressive and pointed out that the world is laughing at us.
In the end, Brinkley compared Trump’s demand of blind loyalty to fascist dictators who did the same thing, noting that doing so didn’t work out well for them.
“The key to Donald Trump is just this kind of blind, fierce loyalty,” Brinkley said. “That’s what Franco expected in Spain, that’s what Mussolini wanted in Italy. It’s a failed agenda so far. It’s been a wreck.”

Indeed, Trump’s expectation of complete loyalty embarrasses the United States. He literally expects everyone to lie for him, and then he turns around and contradicts his own people. Most Americans do not approve of how Trump is doing the job right now. In fact, his approval rating is lower than Clinton’s rating was during his sex scandal and impeachment trial in 1998.
Trump has been shuffling staffers like a professional card dealer and he and hasn’t signed a single piece of major legislation. And keep in mind that we’re just six months into Trump’s first year. This is not how new administrations begin. Of course, this is not how any president behaves either. On top of all that, Trump and his team are being investigated for colluding with Russia during the 2016 Election. The scandals just keep piling up, yet Trump insists he’s more presidential than anyone except Lincoln and blames the media because they are telling the truth instead of acting as his personal propaganda machine.
Donald Trump is already the worst president in American history, and no amount of whining by him will change that. And we all know Trump is going to attack CNN on Twitter because he is too thin-skinned to not act like a little toddler, something else that also makes him unfit for command.
