Donald Trump’s bizarre interview with the New York Times has been getting loads of attention recently, particularly because it took the administration by complete surprise and Trump went off the rails in it.
According to The Washington Post, that interview has done far more damage than just further hurt Trump’s already disastrous reputation – it’s created quite a bit of tension in the White House as Trump continues to golf instead of work during his visit to his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Apparently, “not a single aide or adviser” in the entire Trump administration was aware that Trump would be sitting down with The New York Times for that interview – leaving Trump’s staff scrambling to do damage control. Once the White House was aware this interview was taking place, one of Trump’s aides actually interrupted the interview to put Trump on the phone with White House Communications Director Hope Hicks so she could sit in on the interview (and obviously control Trump’s messaging).
The Post reported that White House staffers
“…were out of the loop even after the Times story was posted online Thursday evening. One White House official, when asked about the president’s impromptu interview, was perplexed, wondering aloud, “What interview? Today?” Another frustrated aide called it “embarrassing.”
Trump’s behaviors are so disgraceful, even his team is mortified by them. When Trump flees Washington D.C. to run off to his “Winter White House”, staffers are probably jumping for joy – until he does something like this. Trump’s aides are there to “filter what information gets to Trump and who meets with him,” which is arguably more difficult when Trump is in Florida, left with far less supervision. And apparently, access to the president is much easier to arrange at Mar-a-Lago. One former White House official said:
“At Mar-a-Lago, anyone who can get within eyesight changes the game. Everyone who is angling for something knows to be there.”
Trump and his White House continue to amaze us as the most dysfunctional administration we’ve ever seen.
