Trump’s Own HHS Just Released A Report That’s Worse News For Trumpcare Than The CBO Score

“Obamacare is a total and complete disaster.” “I would repeal and replace the big lie, Obamacare.” “We are going to repeal and replace Obamacare, which is a disaster.” “Our health care is a horror show.” “Obamacare…is a total catastrophe.” “We will repeal and replace job-killing Obamacare.” “We will repeal and replace the horrible disaster known as Obamacare.” Those are Trump’s own words on Obamacare, and that’s just to start. He and the GOP have beaten the “Obamacare is failing” horse for forever now, making wild claims about how it’s in a death spiral and they’re the only ones with an answer.

And then there’s Trump’s own Department of Health and Human Services, which just released a report that’s terrible news for anyone who champions Trumpcare. It’s worse than the CBO’s score and other analyses that show Trumpcare is going to rip healthcare away from millions. Obamacare, according to the report, is working.

Keep in mind that HHS and its secretary, Tom Price, have been rabidly anti-Obamacare from the start. But apparently, the department can’t bring itself to lie or suppress information damaging to Trump’s and the GOP’s agenda on health care, because their report says that key programs are working exactly as they should.

In fact, according to this report, the marketplace was beginning to stabilize in 2016, contrary to the GOP’s claims that Obamacare was in a death spiral.

Rising premiums are one of the biggest things that the GOP and all their followers love to cite when whining that Obamacare is a horrific disaster. However, take a look at what premiums have been doing since 1999:

Those are numbers that are conveniently forgotten when the right bleats about rising premiums. Insurers, though, insist things like uncertainty about the mandate and whether this particular government will continue with certain subsidies are driving premiums up. This administration and Congress are actively undermining Obamacare for the express purpose of forcing a crisis.

Their health care plan, if indeed it can be called a plan, will make that considerably worse, along with yanking coverage away from millions, including those receiving Medicaid benefits. In short, the blame for these problems doesn’t lie with Obamacare. It lies with the for-profit healthcare industry.

Republicans had seven years to develop and coalesce around a replacement for Obamacare. They squandered all that time, and now they want to pass something that will destroy millions. If we must have a private system like this, they should focus their efforts on fixing Obamacare, not repealing it and replacing it.

But really, what we need is universal coverage. It’s long past time.
