Sarah Huckabee Sanders has basically just started her new position as former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s replacement, and it’s already looking like a disaster.
Today was already off to a horrendous start when Trump kicked off his morning by announcing that he was banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. Trump tweeted:
After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
Several hours later, reporters looked to Huckabee Sanders to defend and explain Trump’s erratic decision (which was not communicated to the Pentagon or his secretary of defense, by the way) – and Huckabee Sanders had no response. Watch what happens when Huckabee Sanders is asked what will happen to the transgender individuals who are already serving in Afghanistan:
In response, Huckabee Sanders could only give America non-answers – because Trump tweeted his trans ban without communicating any sort of policy or details! Huckabee Sanders could only say:
That’s something that the White House and the Department of Defense have to work out together.”
And when the members of the press understandably pushed back, Huckabee Sanders pretty much had a meltdown:
Already, Huckabee Sanders is getting a brutal look at just how horrible Sean Spicer’s old job was. Trump’s new press secretary completely failed to sell his unconstitutional military decision, and it showed what Trump’s new policy really was – an excuse to discriminate against transgender Americans.
There’s a reason Huckabee Sanders had such a hard time making a case for Trump’s new policy – because bigotry is not excusable, and you can’t defend it.
