A former ethics official has insisted that President Trump’s tweet about the firing of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn could end his presidency.
Walter Shaub, a former director of the US Office of Government Ethics tweeted: “Are you ADMITTING you knew Flynn had lied to the FBI when you asked Comey to back off Flynn?” Shaub was tweeting at Trump, though the president has so far not responded on his favorite personal mouthpiece. Shaub added, “Before we slipped into an alternative universe of unabashed corruption, this tweet alone might have ended a Presidential administration.”
Did you know Flynn had lied to the FBI when you fired Yates days after her whistleblowing?

Walter Shaub’s flurry of tweets was in reply to Trump’s seemingly accidental admission that he knew of Flynn’s lies to the FBI when he fired him. At the time, the White House asked Flynn to resign quoting “eroding trust” as the reasoning. In his resignation, Flynn admitted that he had lied to VP Pence, but not the FBI as it later transpired he had done.
I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!

Though it also appears that Trump had some awareness of the seriousness of the allegations, former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate that the president asked him to “let go” of the investigation into Flynn. This claim is still denied by Trump.
Flynn now has the infamy of being the first person charged as a result of the special investigation currently being pursued by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Though the way things are going it seems unlikely that he will be the last. Many will want the president himself to face charges if any wrongdoing is proven against him. Considering the fact that several members of his administration team have now come under the spotlight for their shady actions, the likelihood that their boss isn’t involved seems unlikely. Walter Shaub quit the administration earlier this year due to Trump and his business interests.
