Attorney General Jeff Sessions is now a possible suspect in the expanding Russia investigation according to The Associated Press.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who has vast prosecutorial powers, is focusing exclusively on criminal actions relating to “perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence and intimidation of witnesses,” explained ABC News. That much has already been reported.
But, on Friday afternoon, it was also revealed by the Associated Press that “the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller may also expand to look into the roles of the attorney general and deputy attorney general in the firing of FBI Director James Comey.”
Basically – since Jeff Sessions took part in the firing of James Comey after recusing himself from all things related to the Russia investigation, he could be facing obstruction of justice charges. That’s a big deal. President Trump could also be facing such charges once the investigation is complete.
The news comes as Congressional investigators are discovering whether Sessions had an additional private meeting with Russia’s Ambassador during the presidential campaign, a meeting that he has up to this date still not disclosed to the public despite having said he was forthcoming on the matter.
Up until this time – Sessions previously failed to disclose his meetings with Russian officials – this will just be another tip of the iceberg. Also – in addition to not telling the Senate Judiciary Committee about the meetings, Sessions also failed to disclose them on his national security form.
