Following the firing of NBC host Matt Lauer over an alleged sexual assault allegation by another NBC employee, Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to not only revel but to also throw dirt on MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

After a busy morning of retweeting racist anti-Muslim videos, the president decided to aim for the contentious MSNBC host who is a regular critic of Trump and his GOP sycophants. Trump tweeted a call to investigate a 16-year-old “mystery” surrounding the death of a woman who interned for Scarborough when he served as a Republican U.S. Congressman in Florida.

In July 2001, Lori Klausutis was found dead in then-Rep. Scarborough’s Florida office. However, there was no “mystery” surrounding her death, just unfortunate circumstances.

From the Associated Press via Mediaite:

“A 28-year-old office worker for U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough was found dead Friday in the congressman’s district office.

Preliminary findings from the medical examiner’s office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide, said Police Chief Steve Hogue.

Authorities identified the woman as Lori Klausutis of Niceville. She had worked for Scarborough since May 1999, said Mick Serrano, press secretary for the congressman.”

According to the local medical examiner, Klausustis (who mentioned to a co-worker that she was feeling ill just before she died) fell unconscious due to an abnormal heartbeat and fell striking her head on a desk as she went down. The medical examiner ruled the head injury as the cause of death.

Since then, various conservative conspiracy sites have promoted the narrative that Scarborough was somehow involved in the intern’s death. Gawker documented that the most recent appearance of the conspiracy surfaced when Daily Kos founder and MSNBC regular Markos Moulitsas got into a bitter Twitter battle with Scarborough in 2010. During the exchange, Moulitsas referred to the “story of a certain dead intern.” That jab triggered Scarborough to fire back accusing Moulitsas of having  “a long history of spreading lies suggesting I am a murderer.”

However, the story continues to be a favorite campfire tale among Trump supporters. Here’s a video of one of his fans raising her “concerns” about this so-called “mystery.”

Needless, to say, there is no evidence that Scarborough had anything to do with Klausutis’ death, however, leave it to America’s most ignorant president and his sycophants to not let facts get in the way of a good distraction from his disastrous administration.

Meanwhile, Special Counsel Robert Mueller quietly sharpens another pencil.
