As if Trump supporters needed another reason to regret their vote, now their choice for president has admitted that a central campaign promise, the promise to build a wall along the Mexican-border and have the Mexican government pay for it, was actually a lie.
On August 3rd, The Washington Post leaked the transcript of a phone call between Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and President Trump. In the phone conversation, Trump made wild claims about only winning New Hampshire because it is a “drug-infested den” and urged Nieto to me more quiet about the border wall.
The call was made on January 27th, just a week after Trump had taken office. And, what appeared to have started off as a conversation about issues of trade and immigration turned into Trump’s insistence that Nieto should stop making public claims about Mexico not paying for the wall.
Trump said, “You cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances.”
He insisted further and hinted that his thoughts are politically motivated by saying “You cannot say anymore that the Unites States is going to pay for the wall. I am just going to say that we are working it out. Believe it or not, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important talk about”
This is not the first instance of President Trump being two-faced about his campaign promises. The only question is, what will be revealed next?
