Another one bites the dust in the Trump Administration. Thankfully, this official is resigning in protest.
On August 1st, Elizabeth “Betsy” Southerland resigned from her 30-year run at the Environmental Protection Agency. In her resignation letter, she states “the environmental field is suffering from the temporary triumph of myth over truth” which is undoubtedly a reference to the theme of “alternative facts” that the White House has now normalized.
In her three-page, scathing resignation letter that can be found on peer.org she writes “The truth is there is NO war on coal, there is NO economic crisis caused by environmental protection, and climate change IS caused by man’s activities” A statement that goes against all of Trump and his supporters’ claims since taking office.
According to The Hill, Southerland said that since Scott Pruitt (Trump’s infamous climate change denying pick for head of the agency) took over the agency several regulations that were aimed at protecting the environment has been scrapped.
She went on to further criticize the direction the EPA is going by saying:
“Should (the) EPA repeal two existing rules protecting infants from neurotoxins in order to promulgate a new rule protecting adults from newly discovered liver toxins?– faced with such painful choices, the best possible outcome for the American people would be regulatory paralysis where no rules are released so that existing protections remain in place”.
The EPA, Southerland wrote had once been a “guiding light to make the ‘right thing’ happen for the greater good”. From her resignation, it is clear that she no longer sees the EPA in that light.
She ends her exit letter by stating “It may take a few years and even an environmental disaster, but I am confident that Congress and the courts will eventually restore all the environmental protections repealed by this administration because the majority of the American people recognize that this protection of public health and safety is right and it is just.”
