Top Bush Aide Sounds The Alarm On Trump’s ‘Fundamental Unfitness To Serve’

A former aide to President George W. Bush and opinion writer for the Washington Post sounded the alarm on Donald Trump’s “fundamental unfitness to serve,” and warned Republicans that now is the time to panic and not be complacent.

Michael Gerson, who served as a deputy assistant and director of speechwriting in the Bush administration, called out House Speaker Paul Ryan and others in the GOP, warning them of Trump’s personal conflicts and his obsessiveness.

“But the real problem has always been Trump’s fundamental unfitness for high office,” he writes.

Gerson said that Sen. Bob Corker “has given public permission to raise the most serious questions: Is Trump psychologically and morally equipped to be president? And could his unfitness cause permanent damage to the country?”

“It is no longer possible to safely ignore the leaked cries for help coming from within the administration,” Gerson continued. “They reveal a president raging against enemies, obsessed by slights, deeply uninformed and incurious, unable to focus, and subject to destructive whims.”

Corker said recently that Trump is treating the presidency like “a reality show” and could be setting the nation “on the path to World War III.” In response, Trump called him “Liddle” Bob Corker, to disparage him for his height, thus confirming that he does indeed treat the presidency like a reality show.

We’ve all heard conservatives say “Let Trump be Trump”:

It was once urged, “Let Reagan be Reagan.” Who, besides the oleaginous Sean Hannity, would say, “Let Trump be Trump”? The security of our country — and potentially the lives of millions of people abroad — depends on Trump being someone else entirely. It depends on the president being some wise, strategic, restrained leader he has never been.

“The time for whispered criticisms and quiet snickering is over,” Gerson writes. “The time for panic and decision is upon us.”

The time, however, should have been “over” months ago. The chaotic manner in which Trump tries to lead this country is tearing us apart.
