White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is having a rough week. Not only did he walk out of a press briefing yesterday — without taking any questions from reporters — but today Spicer pretty much had a meltdown over criticism of Donald Trump’s border wall.
During Spicer’s press briefing today, Spicer unveiled some designs for the big bad border wall that Trump’s been promising Americans since the beginning of his campaign. It turns out, the border wall is more of a fence – leaving reporters baffled as he showed off a few pictures of what one reporter accurately called a “tough guy fence.”
It all started when Breitbart correspondent Charlie Spiering pointed out that Trump had not delivered and said the POTUS was not “fighting for the wall that he promised.” This prompted Spicer to start using his handy visuals, and it all went downhill from there. Showing off a few bad pictures, Spicer said:
Those images represent our nation’s current border security. So every time that [undocumented immigrants] cut through, break through, it’s costing just under a thousand bucks for us to go out and have to fix.”
Spicer then displayed some heavy duty fences, stating that Trump’s budget provides $300 million so that 40 miles of “border fencing” can be replaced. It’s not hard to see where this is going. Spiering cut in and asked what everyone else was thinking:
Just one question about the photos. Are those photos of fences or walls.”
Spicer refused to acknowledge the reality of the situation, and insisted that the fences were walls:
There are various types of walls that can be built under the legislation that was just passed.”
Spiering pushed back and said, “That is a fence.” Spicer insisted it was a “levee wall” before CNN correspondent Jim Acosta joined in and said:
It’s not the wall the president promised.”
By now, Spicer is having a panic attack. Things got even worse as Spiering stood up for all Trump voters and pointed out:
So you’re basically just telling the president’s supporters to be satisfied with this existing tough-guy fencing thing until he’s ready to build the wall?”
Spicer lost it. Giving a completely untrue and unsatisfactory response, he said:
No! What I’m telling anybody is that the president said he’s going to build a wall and he’s doing it. And he’s using the best technology. That’s what I’m telling you.”
