While Trump is on his way to embarrass our nation in Asia, Republicans lawmakers introduce a resolution on Friday calling for Robert Mueller to recuse himself as the special counsel investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 US election, according to Business Insider.
The bill was brought up by GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, and Louie Gohmert, who stated that Mueller should resign because he did not bring charges during an unrelated investigation into the Obama-era Uranium One deal while he was serving as FBI director.
“These deeply troubling events took place when Mr. Mueller was the Director of the FBI. As such, his impartiality is hopelessly compromised,” Gaetz said in a statement. “He must step down immediately.”
Despite the accusations, Gaetz’s Republican colleagues have previously expressed support for Mueller and his investigation. Senate Republicans have even introduced bills to create a barrier between Trump and Mueller in the event the president attempts to fire him from the position.
Instead of focusing on Mueller’s firing, Republicans like Matt Gaetz should focus on recusing themselves. Back in 2008, Gaetz was arrested for a DUI as he was driving back from the Swamp, a nightclub on Okaloosa Island, Florida, in a 2001 BMW SUV registered to his father. While he was arrested, he refused to take a breathalyzer test; he apparently didn’t have his license suspended for a year when he refused the breath test — as Florida law rules. And he didn’t have that refusal used against him in a criminal proceeding. At the time of his arrest, his father was serving as a local politician and he avoided a DUI conviction. That America – is an example of being privileged.
This paranoia law crafted by the GOP is just another failed attempt to distract America from Mueller’s probe and from efforts to ensure that a foreign government, Moscow, does not influence future U.S. elections. Republicans tend to forget that the Uranium Deal was debunked repeatedly and the only reason Republicans and Trump are resurfacing it is because they are terrified of the damaging information Mueller will hold over their heads.
