Donald Trump is in seriously deep sh*t as special prosecutor Robert Mueller has decided to defy his warning not to look into his family’s business.
During an interview on Wednesday, Trump threatened to fire Mueller if he starts investigating his family’s business practices as part of the ever-growing Russia probe, calling such a direction a “red line” that Mueller should not cross.
“I think that’s a violation,” Trump said. “Look, this is about Russia.”
Indeed, it is about Russia. And Trump’s warning basically gave Mueller an idea of where to look if he wants to find more evidence of collusion.
And so, Mueller’s investigation is preparing to examine Trump’s various business deals with Russia over the years.
A source told Bloomberg that “FBI investigators and others are looking at Russian purchases of apartments in Trump buildings, Trump’s involvement in a controversial SoHo development with Russian associates, the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and Trump’s sale of a Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch in 2008.”
It’s all part of an investigation into a “broad range of transactions involving Trump’s businesses as well as those of his associates.”
Mueller’s investigation into Trump’s business practices picks up where former United States Attorney Preet Bharara left off when he was fired by Trump for looking into a major money-laundering scheme connected to Trump’s businesses.
In the words of Joe Biden, this is a “big f*ckin’ deal.”
Basically, Trump’s warning is a suggestion that he has something to hide. If Trump was innocent of any wrongdoing, he would have no problem letting Mueller investigate. By issuing a specific warning not to look at his business practices, Trump tipped Mueller off about where the investigation should look.
If Trump fires Mueller, he would be obstructing an investigation, just like he did when he fired James Comey and Preet Bharara earlier this year while both men were doing their jobs by investigating Trump’s Russia scandal.
Looking at Trump’s business dealings could blow the scandal wide open and be totally embarrassing for Trump to the point where he may be forced to resign. Either that or he’ll be impeached and put in jail.
Make no mistake, Trump can’t just fire his way out of the trouble he is in right now. Firing Mueller would make it clear that Trump is hiding something, and it would cause a chorus of demands for an investigation into Trump’s business dealings, which could even include forcing him to release his tax returns, which would do a lot to shed light on what Trump obviously does not want anyone, especially federal investigators, to see.
