Vice President Mike pence is currently vacationing in his Colorado home for the holidays. A neighbor decided to post a banner that said: “Make America Gay Again.” The banner was installed on a pillar that sits at the far end of the property’s driveways, with the Aspen Times reporting that it was installed by the daughters of the couple that lives there and their respective girlfriends.
Mike Pence Has a Very Fractured Relationship With the LGBT Community
This is the vice president that said supporting gay couples signaled “societal collapse.” In 2006, Pence supported a constitutional amendment that would define marriage between a man and a woman. He conjured Harvard research, saying that “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.”
This is the vice president that is not interested in protecting LGBT people from workplace discrimination. Pence actively opposed a law that would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. He voted against the Employment Nondiscrimination Act in 2007, saying that it waged a “war on freedom and religion.”
This is the vice president that was against the appeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. On a CNN interview in 2010, Pence said that he did not want the military to be a hotbed for “social experimentation.” His opposition did not have any effect – the policy ended in 2011.
This is the vice president that rejected legislation that would’ve made bathrooms more inclusive. This past May the federal government allowed school districts to let kids use any bathroom that they feel comfortable using, as long as it aligned with their gender identity. Along with other conservatives, pence opposed the Obama administration directive, adding that the “federal government has no business getting involved in issues of this nature.”
Everyone Was Chili
The deputy was nearby when the banner was hung, with Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo saying that they looked “sheepish” and thought that Secret Service might confront them. When the deputy said that it wasn’t their job to regulate free speech, chili was given out and fed to the authorities.
