Micah Fletcher, Portland Attack Survivor: The REAL Victims Are The Little Girls On The Train (VIDEO)

In the aftermath of the vicious attack on the Portland commuter train on May 26th, America has seen an outpouring of gratitude for the three men who tried to stop the white supremacist attacker. As well we should: The men who lost their lives, and Micah Fletcher, the man who survived the attack, are genuine heroes in the most American sense.

But Fletcher has a new message for us now, and he’s asked that the video he recorded be spread as far and wide as possible.

On Wednesday, Micah posted the video to his Facebook page, along with a link to a fundraiser for the young victims of the racist assault. Appearing in his bedroom in a bathrobe and clearly still shaken up by the incident, Fletcher apologizes for his lack of perfect words. But his voice doesn’t waver:

The little girl who had the misfortune that day to experience what happened on that MAX [train], her life is never going to be the same. I want you to imagine that for a second, being a little girl on that MAX, this man is screaming at you, his face is a pile of knives, his body is a gun. Everything about him is cocked, loaded, and ready to kill you.”

He goes on to say that Portland is not immune from this kind of attack:

This has happened before, and the only thing that was different was the names and faces.”

But Fletcher’s message has a singular purpose. To remind viewers that the true victims that day were the young Muslim teens who will forever be changed. Rather than succumbing to the “white savior complex” that seems to overtake any situation where white folks are seen as heroes intervening on behalf of POC,

We need to remember that this is about them.”

Pleading with viewers to donate to the fundraiser rather than focusing on him, he has parting words for us:

Just remember that they got hurt too. When it comes down to it, when a kid’s hurt like that, we as a society, as a world — as a WORLD — have a moral obligation to do something about it, and to help.”
