Senator John McCain (R-AZ) may go down in history as one of the great political badasses of our time. Recently McCain painted Donald Trump’s worldview as a “half-baked,” “Unpatriotic” burning dumpster fire of pure ignorance.
Monday, the ailing senator, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer, was awarded the Liberty Medal by former Vice President Joe Biden during a ceremony honoring the life and achievements of the POW Vietnam war hero turned 2000 presidential candidate.
McCain, who has a reputation for railing against the tea parting far-right wing of his own party, did not disappoint as he gave an inspired speech that brutally dissected Trump’s geopolitical lunacy that he mistakes for foreign policy. The Senator stated that “spurious nationalism” was something a “tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.”
To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain the last best hope of earth for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.
One of the things McCain hit Trump hardest on, was his reckless abandoning of international agreements and overall disrespect for other countries around the world.
So far, Trump has taken pleasure in trying to dismantle everything former President Barrack Obama had touched. The Iranian Nuclear deal is the latest target in Trump’s crosshairs. However, to this day he’s been unsuccessful in replacing those policies and agreements with any original ideas of his own. Trumpcare is the most glaring example of Trump’s political impotence thus far.
What’s even more remarkable about McCain’s speech, is that out of the hundreds if not thousands of statements mocking and condemning Trumpism, McCain’s eloquent remarks did so without mentioning the orange wannabe fascist by name.
The senator simply reminded us of what real American values are and what they are never going to be.
