When respected strategists are comparing you to lemmings, it’s time to re-evaluate your priorities.

Senate Republicans are desperately trying to pass their own version of Trumpcare, a piece of legislation that would strip health care away from millions of Americans, end Medicaid as we know it, and punish poor people for dropping their insurance plan.

The bill is terrible. It would do economic harm to the nation and lead to thousands of deaths. Republicans don’t even want to read their own bill, nor do they want to see a CBO score, because they know it will be really bad.

But they are trying to pass it anyway because Donald Trump told them to.

And Republican strategist Steve Schmidt is so disgusted by it that he compared Senate Republicans to lemmings jumping off a cliff.

“I think it’s that same genetic impulse that pulls the lemmings over a cliff, one after the other,” Schmidt said during an appearance on MSNBC. “It’s not logical, it’s difficult to understand.”

Schmidt went on to point out that when Democrats risked their political careers to bring healthcare to millions of Americans by passing the Affordable Care Act that they had at least read the bill first and received CBO scoring.

Many Democrats who voted for this laid down their political careers because that’s what they believed the right thing to do was, and they understood the consequences going in. I think that you could go one by one through these Republicans — I don’t think any of them could tell you what’s actually in the legislation. I don’t think they could go particularly deep on it, and I think that’s because I don’t think anybody’s gone particularly deep on it. I think there’s a real lack of understanding. How can anybody — House side, Senate side — vote to reorganize a sixth of the American economy without having a CBO score, without knowing what the cost is? How is that conservative? It’s positively radical.”

If Republicans really want to replace Obamacare, they should do it by passing universal healthcare. That is the only logical step forward. But they would rather do what Trump tells them to do even thought Trump’s plan would cause millions to lose access to affordable health insurance. The bill would especially harm women, children, and the elderly and goes against Republican claims that they are “pro-life.”

If they really give a damn about the American people, they will kill this bill permanently. Because if they pass it, they’ll do so at their own peril.
