Much like their disgraceful, undeserving leader, Donald Trump, the Republican Party is placing blame on everyone else and trying to avoid doing any actual work to improve the country.
In reaction to the horrific shooting at a Republican baseball game, in which GOP Rep. Steve Scalise and four others were injured, many top Republicans are either blaming Democrats or using the shooting as an excuse to hide from Americans who want answers. Earlier today, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) of Georgia stated that the reason Republicans are skipping out on town halls is because they’re afraid of similar shootings – when in reality, they just don’t want to face the angry constituents who deserve answers about the GOP’s disastrous health care bill.
In a statement to The Washington Post, Loudermilk said:
We’re not any more special than anybody else, but we are targets. This is exactly why there is a lot of fear of even doing town halls at this point. Some of the things this guy is posting on Facebook — we get the same things, and even worse.”
Just because Donald Trump only wants to work 20% of his presidency (if that) does not mean that the Republican Party should also be avoiding their jobs. They know their health care bill is extremely unpopular, and they have been getting slammed in town halls over it. Now that they have something to use as an excuse, these lawmakers are taking the easy way out and coming up with reasons why they won’t do town halls, just so they can avoid the backlash from the American people.
If Republicans are really this worried about being shot (even thought the baseball game is in no way connected to town halls), perhaps they should be having conversations about increasing gun safety instead of bailing on constituents.
