Since assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump has taken more breaks than Former-President Obama golfing, enjoying dinners in his infamous Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and enjoy time off from the strenuous job of not getting anything done. Today, he’ll be going on a 17-day vacation.
According to The Associated Press, Trump will spend at least the first part of his vacation at his private golf club in New Jersey. Although this is pretty normal for the presidency (presidents usually spend the month of August vacationing) Trump has already created a reputation for himself based on the fact that he has been on countless breaks since he took office. All of which, costs taxpayers at least $3 million each time according to an analysis done by The Washington Post.
Presidential trips such as these costs millions for a number of reasons. For one, operating Air Force One costs $206,337 an hour. A trip to Mar-a-Lago takes about two hours from Washington D.C which means that a round-trip flight costs $824,000. The other costs are simply due to the fact that each place the president visits has to have maximum secret service security and air support for Air Force One is estimated to cost around $514,000 an hour.
Long story short, if we were to continue financing President Trump’s extravagant vacations to his own resorts, our economy would be in trouble.
Furthermore, President Trump seems to not understand that in order to run a country, he has to be present. The White House is currently undergoing a seismic shift in upper-level staff. Yet the president is completely comfortable taking over 2 weeks off to do what he has been doing almost every weekend since he took office, golf.
President Trump is doing the exact same thing that he criticized President Obama for doing. In 2012 he tweeted “when will Obama next go on vacation if he wins the election? The day after.” and in 2014 he doubled down on this sentiment by tweeting “President Obama has a major meeting on the N.Y.C. Ebola outbreak, with people flying in from all over the country, but decided to play golf!”
He even criticized the Obamas about the amount of money it costs taxpayers whenever a president goes on vacation when he tweeted “The Obama’s Spain vacation cost taxpayers over $476K. They love to spend money.”
Let’s all hope that, one day, Trump gets tired of golfing and actually starts being president.
