The Republican Party currently controls the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House. To that end, one would think they could get plenty done, or, at the very least, keep things running smoothly. That has not been the case, though. The only major legislative achievement they can point to is the disastrously unpopular tax cut for rich people that they are selling as some kind of gift to the middle class. And that’s just for starters. Now, things have gotten even worse for the nation with the GOP in control of Washington, because they have proven they haven’t a clue as to even the barest basics of governing.
On Friday night at midnight, the federal government ceased to function, because the funding ran out. Why? Because the incompetent party in control of all of Washington failed to reach a budget deal that would keep the government up and running. While the House managed to pass some kind of draconian budget, the razor-thin majority that the Republicans hold in the Senate meant they had to do something that they are SUPPOSED to be doing, but that their base would hate: Work with Democrats. While some Republican Senators, such as Lindsey Graham (R-SC), are capable of working with Democrats, many of them, such as Tom Cotton (R-AK) are not. Cotton is a hardliner on things like immigration, and has flat-out refused to do anything to protect DREAMERS, the undocumented young people brought here as children through no fault of their own. And, of course, there are also the problems with the erratic wild card that is the Republican “president,” Donald Trump.
While Senator Graham and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) had a good, bipartisan budget deal that included protections for DREAMERS that they took to the White House for negotiations with Trump that would have kept the government open, Trump flatly rejected the deal, and went on a racist tirade about immigrants from countries populated with black and brown people. Of course, any deal that protects brown people is a no go for the racist, anti-immigrant elements in the GOP, namely people like Trump and Cotton. So, now, thousands of government employees will go without pay until these morons can get their act together, and vital functions and programs of the government will not be funded.
Good going, Republicans. You wanted control, and you got it. You have now proven that you don’t know how to govern, so, come 2018, we’ll make sure the party that does know how to do its job is returned to power once more.
