The Federal Bureau of Investigation agrees with the findings of the Central Intelligence Agency and believes that Russia interfered in November’s presidential election to help Donald Trump win.
FBI Director James B. Comey and Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. announced on Friday that they agree with the CIA’s assessment of the situation and are convinced Russia meddled in our election in an effort to put Trump in the White House.
In a message to the CIA workforce, CIA Director John Brennan said that all three agencies are in agreement when it comes to Russia’s involvement in our election.
“Earlier this week, I met separately with (Director) FBI James Comey and DNI Jim Clapper, and there is strong consensus among us on the scope, nature, and intent of Russian interference in our presidential election,” Brennan wrote.
“The three of us also agree that our organizations, along with others, need to focus on completing the thorough review of this issue that has been directed by President Obama and which is being led by the DNI.”
Following last week’s House intelligence briefing by a senior FBI counterintelligence official, many lawmakers from both parties were left with the impression that the FBI hadn’t reached the same conclusion as the CIA when it comes to Russia’s election meddling. However, that is apparently not the case at all.
“The truth is they were never all that different in the first place,” an official said of the FBI and CIA positions.
Brennan also said in his message that the agency has been providing lawmakers with briefings of the situation since the summer.
“In recent days, I have had several conversations with members of Congress, providing an update on the status of the review as well as the considerations that need to be taken into account as we proceed,” Brennan wrote. “Many – but unfortunately not all – members understand and appreciate the importance and the gravity of the issue, and they are very supportive of the process that is underway.”
The CIA revealed last week that Russia had interfered in the presidential election not only to undermine public confidence in the U.S. election system but also to try to help get Trump into the Oval Office. Trump has blown off the CIA’s findings regarding Russia’s interference, blasting the claims as “ridiculous.” But as more and more lawmakers call for an investigation, which the FBI’s announcement is likely to bolster, Trump may eventually end up having to take this seriously.
