Once again, Donald Trump lied and got totally humiliated in public for it.
One of the central values of the Boy Scouts is trustworthiness. In fact, being trustworthy is the top value listed in Scout law.
A Scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend on him.
On Tuesday, Trump claimed that the Boy Scouts of America called his speech “the greatest,” referring to the horrible partisan speech he delivered at the Boy Scout Jamboree last week that disgusted former scouts and parents across the country.
Trump, who was never a scout, literally got the thousands of scouts in attendance to boo President Obama, who was a former scout. He also attacked Hillary Clinton, whined about the media, and bragged about winning the election.
During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump denied that there was a mixed reaction to his speech, and boasted that the head of the Boy Scouts told him that it was “the greatest speech” ever.
“I got a call from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful,” Trump said. “So there was — there was no mix.”
The problem with Trump’s claim is that Boy Scouts of America chief executive Michael Surbaugh issued an apology for Trump’s speech.
“For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained nonpartisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program,” Surbaugh said.
Trump’s boast is merely an act of desperation. He has recently claimed that he is “more presidential” than any other president in American history except Abraham Lincoln. And he has also claimed that he has accomplished more than any president except Franklin Roosevelt. And just like those brags, Trump’s claim that he gave “the greatest” Boy Scout speech ever can be refuted and has been.
Not long after Trump’s claim, the Boy Scouts themselves denied it.
“The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself,” the Boy Scout organization said in a statement.
So, it appears Trump lied and he got called out for it by the Boy Scouts. That has to be humiliating. Still, it’s not enough.
The response of the Boy Scouts of America has been weak and pathetic. Trump’s speech went against everything they claim to stand for and they don’t even have the balls to admit it openly. How can anyone trust the Boy Scouts if they won’t even strongly denounce Trump’s speech and his un-scoutlike behavior?
