Trump is probably happy that his nemesis Arnold Schwarzenegger is quitting Celebrity Apprentice, but won’t like the reason why. According to the movie star, the show’s brand has become completely toxic ever since Trump’s became president.
In a brutal interview with Empire Online, Schwarzenegger explained that he did everything he possible could to help the show succeed but people saw it and immediately thought of Trump’s gross behavior. It turned off viewers by the millions.
“It’s not about the show,” he explained. “because everyone I ran into came up to me and said ‘I love the show… but I turned it off because as soon as I read Trump’s name I’m outta there!'”
“NBC did everything they could to promote the show and [producer] Mark Burnett did a fantastic job. No one really knew that this was going to happen and I think that everyone was caught off guard.”
“When people found out that Trump was still involved as executive producer and was still receiving money from the show, then half the people [started] boycotting it.”
Trump infamously refused to detach his name from the show despite being elected president. He’s still listed as an “executive producer” although he claims he takes no money from his involvement. (We can’t be entirely sure if this is true, because he refuses to release his tax returns.)
The show has been hit with extremely bad ratings and over half of its sponsors pulling out because Trump was still associated with it. This has led to a disaster for NBC which had apparently hoped that it could have its cake and eat it too.
Meanwhile, Trump has spent much of his time in the White House signalling that he was happier just being a reality tv star. At the National Prayer Breakfast he asked the group of religious leaders to pray for Celebrity Apprentice and mocked Schwarzenegger for not being successful. Schwarzenegger made him an offer: If you hate being president and love being on tv so much, why don’t we switch roles?
Trump refused to answer.
