Donald Trump doesn’t want to be seen as the guy who is encouraging a riot, except that’s exactly what he’s doing. Toward the end of Thursday’s CNN Republican Debate, moderator Jake Tapper asked Trump about the ways that protesters have been treated by his own supporters as they’ve been escorted out from his events.
“People come with tremendous passion and love for country,” Trump said blowing off Tapper’s question. “And when they see protests — in some cases — you’re mentioning one case, which I haven’t seen. I heard about it, which I don’t like. But when they see what’s going on in this country, they have anger that’s unbelievable. They have anger. They love this country.” He ultimately condoned it.
Tapper pushed more citing February 23, when Trump said of a protester: “I’d like to punch him in the face.” Again, February 27: “In the good ol’ days, they’d have ripped him out of that seat so fast.” Then there was February 1: “Knock the crap out of him, would you? Seriously, OK just knock the hell — I promise you I will pay for the legal fees. I promise, I promise.” Looks like he might get the chance after all.
Friday, Donald Trump told an audience it was “very, very appropriate” for his supporter to have punched the black protester at a rally in North Carolina earlier this week. “That’s what we need a little bit more of,” Trump said.
The 26-year-old black protester wasn’t charged, but charges were filed against the old white guy who sucker-punched him. But it was the protester that Trump took issue with. “This was a guy who was—should not have been allowed to do what he did. And frankly, if you want to know the truth, the police were very, very restrained. The police have been amazing. But the police were very, very restrained.”
Restrained because they didn’t shoot or kill the protester? Or because the Trump rally attendant didn’t kill the protester instead of just saying he wanted to? One thing is certain, Trump can’t figure out if he’s for violence or against it. Chances are he’s all in favor of it unless it makes him look bad.
