10-year-old Mikaila Ulmer might be young, but don’t mistake her for a rookie in the business world. She has been an entrepreneur since the tender young age of 4 and a half. Her lemonade business, Beesweet Lemonade is the result of a series of events that began with her getting stung not once, but twice, when she was 4. She then learned about the importance of bees and the ecosystem after doing some research.
She took that knowledge and combined it with her grandmother’s secret lemonade recipe that includes among other things, flax seed oil. She combines that with honey and other ingredients to create a winning combination that has made her business a huge success. She entered it originally in a local young entrepreneurs contest and parlayed that success to where she now has gotten her lemonade into multiple Whole Foods locations and other stores.
This is not your typical front yard lemonade stand.
Mikaila takes part of the profits from the business and donates it to causes that help the bees. In addition to that, the lemonade is naturally caffeine free and contains no high fructose corn syrup. Mikaila and her father went on ABC’s “Shark Tank” last week to pitch expansion plans for her enterprise. Shark Tank is a weekly show that puts budding or struggling small business people in front of some of the world’s best business people and investors. Some deals done on the show are multi-million dollar level.
Again, this is not your typical front yard lemonade stand.
On Shark Tank, she wowed the investors with her passion and knowledge. But most of the panel balked at any investment. Most of them were encouraging, however, basically telling her she has a bright future ahead of her. The last investor, FUBU’s CEO, Daymond John decided to take a risk ,deciding that the future was now.
He offered to invest 60,000 dollars in exchange for a 50% stake in the company. He then explained that stake would be conditional on him negotiating further expansion into some stores he had influence with. Mikaila and her father took the offer. So now she will be able to expand her business and help the ecosystem even more.
