Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is the worst kind of person. The billionaire businessman stands on stages across America and brags about how generous he is and his “poorly educated” voters just lap it up. His sons have said that he donates millions and millions of dollars a year to charity but can provide no documentation to back that up. This lack of proof caused journalists across the country to start digging into the charity that bears his name and what they found was shocking. Not only has Trump not donated to the Donald J. Trump Organization in almost a decade, he is using other people’s money to settle his legal debts.
According to a review of legal filings and interviews conducted by The Washington Post, Donald Trump has spent more than a quarter of a million dollars of money donated to his charity to pay his legal fees:
Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump’s charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against “self-dealing” – which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.
The money went towards the following:
- In 2007, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club used $100,000 of Foundation money to settle a dispute with the city of Palm Beach, Fl. The club had $120,000 in unpaid fines related to a flag pole when the city agreed to wipe out the debt if he donated $100,000 to a veterans group.
- One of Trump’s golf courses settled a lawsuit with a plaintiff by promising to donate $158,000 to a charity of their choice–the money came from the Foundation.
Jeffrey Tenenbaum, of the Venable law firm in Washington, called Trump’s actions one of the most “blatant” self-dealing schemes he has ever seen. “I represent 700 nonprofits a year, and I’ve never encountered anything so brazen. If he’s using other people’s money – run through his foundation – to satisfy his personal obligations, then that’s about as blatant an example of self-dealing as I’ve seen in a while.”
The New York attorney general’s office is currently conducting an investigation into the Trump Foundation’s dealings after it came to light that he was using donors’ money to buy himself gifts. If the Internal Revenue Service also decides to go after the presidential candidate he could be forced to give all of the money back to the Foundation and face tax fines.
It’s unbelievable that this guy is who the Republican Party has chosen to be their leader. Not only has he screwed thousands of Americans out of their hard earned money by selling them condos that were never built and charging tuition for a University that was a scam, he is also stealing charitable donations. How in the world could this possibly be okay with GOP voters? The only answer that I can come up with is that they are A) not paying attention or B) they just don’t give a shit that they have elected a thief. Sadly, I think — especially since I live in a state who elected and reelected a man whose company perpetrated the largest Medicare fraud in the country — the voters on the right just do not care if the person they elect is shady as hell.
