Within minutes of the announcement concerning the death of Chief Justice Antonin Scalia last Saturday, Republicans had already pledged not only to deny any nomination that President Obama would put before them but to also stick their fingers in their ears and scream, “Na Na Na- I can’t hear your nomination!”
As the GOP obstruction machine reared its ugly head, Republicans tried every lie, trick and form of propaganda to justify their obstructionism. From invoking the so-called “Thurman Rule,” which has about as much legal standing as calling a time-out during a police chase, to the outright lie that no President in the last 80 years has nominated a Supreme Court Justice during their last year in office.
A lie boldly initiated by Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who released a statement shortly after Scalia’s death stating,
The fact of the matter is that it’s been standard practice over the last 80 years to not confirm Supreme Court nominees during a presidential election year.
This complete distortion of the facts was later parroted by Republican candidate and Evangelical snake oil salesman, Ted Cruz, who proclaimed the following day on “Meet The Press”,
It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.
Luckily, for every ridiculous lie dumped onto the information highway, we now have satirical comedians like Lee Camp, Samantha Bee, and Stephen Colbert to take these perverters of truth to task and expose their lies with the sharp scalpel of political humor.
One such fact driven champion of the people, John Oliver, wasted little time taking Republicans to the reality woodshed for a verbal lashing that made short work of Cruz and his malicious band of GOP liars. On his critically acclaimed HBO show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, Oliver laid into Republicans with a 5 minute segment that made them look as foolish as they do corrupt.
With so much misinformation, conspiracy theories, outright lies, and propaganda clogging up the pipeline of reality, political comedians and satirists follow the proud tradition of pulling back the curtain on corporate corruption and government abuse of power with humor. And what could be more American than that?
