Donald Trump still has not been able to provide any solid evidence to back up the accusations he made that former President Barack Obama had wiretapped his phones in the Trump Tower before the presidential election. However, his attempts are definitely something to laugh at.
After failing to come up with evidence on Monday (the deadline he was given by the Justice Department), Trump tried to redeem himself in a recent interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, and predictably failed miserably. When Carlson asked him about the series of tweets in which he accused Obama of the wiretapping, Trump gave the most pathetic excuse for ‘evidence’:
“I had been reading about things. I read, I think it was January 20th in a New York Times article about wiretapping. There was an article, I think they used that exact term. I read other things.”
Trump has been attacking the New York Times for quite a while now, so it’s strange that he would confess to reading and believing in something the Times reported. Trump also said he heard about wiretapping from Fox News’ Bret Baier.
Then, acting as if he hasn’t been attacking every intelligence agency for investigating his ties with Russia, Trump tried to defend why he didn’t bring the wiretapping evidence to the intelligence community, considering he has all the power to investigate these things as POTUS. This came with yet another dig at Obama:
“I don’t want to do anything to violate any strength of an agency. And by the way, I just want people to know the CIA was hacked and a lot of things were taken. That was during the Obama years, that was not us, that was during the Obama situation.”
Carlson once again asked Trump why he didn’t verify the wiretapping before tweeting about it, and Trump’s response was baffling:
“Because the New York Times wrote about it. Not that I respect the New York Times — I call it the failing New York Times.”
Trump has absolutely no real evidence that Obama wiretapped him, and that’s why he’s coming up with all these lame excuses and begging the Justice Department for more time to collect his “evidence.” You can watch this insane interview below:
