Things are looking pretty bad for Ralph Shortey, the Oklahoma State Senator who also served as State Chair for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. In addition to being caught red-handed in a seedy Super 8 motel with a teenage boy, he was also caught with a backpack with marijuana, lotion, and condoms inside. While incriminating, that wasn’t enough to charge the guy with child prostitution – only soliciting. All of that has changed now, though.
Police went through the tablet belonging to the 17-year-old boy who was inside the motel room with Shortey, and they found lewd messages that had been exchanged between the two. Also, there was an explicit exchange in which Shortey offered the boy money for, quote, “sexual stuff.” Legally, 16 is Oklahoma’s age of consent, but when it comes to prosecuting child prostitution, that age is upped to 18. This was enough for Oklahoma District Attorneys to hit Shortey with child prostitution charges on Thursday. Therefore, Senator Shortey is definitely in deep sh*t.
The reaction from Shortey’s colleagues in the Senate was swift and severe. He has been stripped of use of his Capitol office, his ability to author and vote on legislation, use his expense accounts, and any and all powers related to being a state senator. Hell, he cannot even use his Capitol parking space until this matter is resolved. The moved to strip Shortey of all of his power and privilege passed easily on a bipartisan basis, 43-0. Senate Pro Tem Mike Schulz says of the action:
The Oklahoma Senate has full faith that the judicial system will play out appropriately and bring this matter to a lawful conclusion. This resolution reserves the right of the Oklahoma Senate to pursue further action if more facts come to light.”
So, in other words, they might not even be through with the guy. Wonder what more they could do? It’s good enough for this stinking hypocrite anyway, though. He’s a “family values” Republican who was caught engaging in child prostitution with a teenage boy who is probably scarred for life over this.
Lock him and throw away the key.
