Ever since the right-wing propaganda attack against Planned Parenthood, in which they released heavily edited videos that implied that the reproductive health organization is selling “baby” body parts for fun and profit, Republican politicians have all been crying to defund the clinics.
Now, Planned Parenthood is fighting back. They are suing three states over the attempts at defunding and the latest is Arkansas.
“Governor Hutchinson has no business telling women in Arkansas where they can and cannot go for cancer screenings, birth control, HIV tests and other care,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood.
“It’s insulting, it’s outrageous, and it’s exactly why we’re fighting in Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, in Congress, and anywhere there are efforts to block our patients from accessing the care they need,” she added.

According to the Obama administration, the states that are blocking Medicaid funding are breaking federal law.
“CMS has notified states who have taken action to terminate their Medicaid provider agreements with Planned Parenthood that they may be in conflict with federal law,” Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Ben Wakana said in a statement.
“Longstanding Medicaid laws prohibit states from restricting individuals who have coverage through Medicaid from receiving care from a qualified provider,” he said. “By restricting which provider a woman could choose to receive care from, women could lose access to critical preventive care, such as cancer screenings.”

Planned Parenthood is the main or one of the main healthcare providers for over five million men and women each year. More than half of those are in the U.S. alone. Planned Parenthood is especially critical in the United States because even with the Affordable Care Act, many women rely on Medicaid or have no health insurance at all. Planned Parenthood accepts Medicaid when many doctors don’t. They also have a sliding scale payment system which allows women to pay what they can afford.
Abortions are actually one of Planned Parenthood’s least popular services. Mostly, they are in the business of protecting women’s health, men’s health and preventing unwanted pregnancies. Only 3 percent of their services are abortions and as for selling body parts, they do donate (with the woman’s permission) fetal tissue for medical research. They are only reimbursed their own costs.
