Sunday, October 11 marks National Coming Out Day for 2015. This may not mean much of anything to most people; however, to those of us in the LGBTQ community, it means a great deal. There’s nothing more difficult than telling the people you love that you are LGBTQ, especially if you fear or expect a negative reaction.
Often, we are met with fear, hatred, religious bigotry, and even violence. Some teens who dare to come out to their families lose their very homes.
Well, coming out isn’t always the horrible ordeal that we usually hear about. Luckily, the anonymous confession app Whisper exists, and people generally use it to tell stories, good and bad, that they don’t have another outlet in which to express them.
Here are just a few absolutely awesome coming out stories that Queerty found on the confession app:
As my own personal coming out was very rocky (to say the least), reading these definitely brings tears to my eyes. I am so happy that more and more parents are accepting their children for who and what they are, rather than pushing them to be some preconceived idea that never existed.
This, folks, is how you react to friends and relatives who trust you enough to come out to you. Hopefully, these confessions soften a few hearts, and give some closeted people to use National Coming Out day to walk in their truths, and see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter what, we all deserve to be accepted for who we are, all of who we are.
That is what National Coming Out Day is all about.
