‘Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ Owner Blames Satan When GoFundMe Shuts Down Her Pity Party

After nearly two years in court, an administrative judge found that “Sweet Cakes By Melissa” did in fact break the law when the owners refused to bake a same-sex couple’s wedding cake. He recommended that Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of the bakery, be fined $135,000 for their indiscretion.

With all the hype drummed up by Memories Pizza in Indiana collecting nearly a million dollars for being bigots, the Kleins figured they’d follow suit, posting a link on their Facebook page to a GoFundMe campaign that was set up for them.

Intolerant right-wing bigots answered in true “Christian” fashion, donating more than $20K in four hours, with a reported $109K having been raised by the time GoFundMe shut down their campaign.

GoFundMe made it clear in a statement that people who break the law won’t be raising money to cover their fines on their site:

After careful review by our team, we have found the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions.

The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal. While a different campaign was recently permitted for a pizzeria in Indiana, no laws were violated and the campaign remained live. However, the subjects of the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign have been formally charged by local authorities and found to be in violation of Oregon state law concerning discriminatory acts. Accordingly, the campaign has been disabled.

It’s unfortunate that GoFundMe won’t be refunding all of the “donations” to the clowns who think giving money to ignorance instead of the needy is the Christian way, but they are, after all, running a business themselves, and their cut of that money is substantial.

They did, however, send a clear message to other haters: If you’re going to break the law and discriminate against people, collect the money for your fines elsewhere.

After the campaign was closed, the Kleins took to their Facebook page to blame Satan for not allowing them to collect free money for being anything but Christian, and promised that God had a plan and that they will prevail:

Evidently Go fund me has shut down our Go fund me page and will not let us raise any money. Satan’s really at work but I know our God has a plan and wins in the end!

Way to pander to weak-minded imbeciles who don’t understand that ten or twenty dollars could feed a whole lot of hungry people, provide shelter for a homeless veteran, or even help find a home for a stray puppy. Anything but free cash for losers would be money better spent.

These GoFundMe things are a sad reflection on what “christians” feel is important. A hillbilly pizza place gets nearly a million dollars while food banks & pantries (some run by churches) are having a hard time keeping their shelves filled.

It is more proof that the extreme right wing, religious wrong are OBSESSED with what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home. No wonder more people leave religion every day.

The bakers claim that they have been victimized by Satan, and yet there were no lightning bolts.
Seems to me it must all be God’s will.

I contacted GoFundMe with this statement and encourage others to do the same:

The Sweet Cakes By Melissa campaign violates your Terms and Conditions, but instead of wiping out the campaign completely, you are benefiting yourselves and the illegal campaign by allowing the persons charged with a crime to collect most of the requested funds. You are, in effect, aiding and abetting an illegal activity and are vulnerable to litigation yourselves. And your willingness to take a cut amply demonstrates a self-serving corporate morality.

It never ceases to amaze me at the audacity of people in their pursuit of the almighty dollar. The Kleins saw a get-rich-quick scam just calling out to them, “use me, use me”. It’s safe to say that sounds more like the work of the devil than shutting down their opportunistic site ever could.
