Another day, another rabidly homophobic and profoundly ignorant right wing nut has spoken. This time, it is David Barton, who like so many of his ilk, is obsessed with gay people, and in particular, gay sex. Well now, Barton’s lunacy takes us to a subject he clearly knows nothing about: the fight against AIDS.
According to this nutjob, there will never be any sort of vaccine or cure for AIDS, ever, no matter how much money is spent or how much research is done. Why? Because the Bible told him so. Barton got his opinions on the matter from Romans 1 in the Bible, which says:
Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
During a presentation at Colorado’s Charis Bible College, Barton warned students of what would happen if they engaged in what he calls “homosexual behavior”:
The federal government, in the last several years, has spent tens of billions of dollars looking for a vaccine for AIDS and I don’t think they will ever find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS. And I say that based on a particular Bible verse … Notice this, homosexuals receive in their bodies the penalty due them. The Bible says if you engage in homosexuality, your body will do things that will penalize you. So if you can have a vaccine for AIDS, then you’re keeping your body from penalizing you. I don’t think they’ll ever find a vaccine for AIDS.
Well, I hate to break it to you, Mr. Barton, but we are already very close to a vaccine for AIDS. Further, in the meantime, we have PrEp, which lessens the risk of infection, even if you have unprotected intercourse with an HIV-positive partner, by 86 percent. Even better than that, an HIV positive person who is taking anti-retrovirals has a 96 percent reduced rate of infecting an HIV negative partner. So, in other words, you’re full of sh*t. Then again, sane people already knew that.
Barton went on to claim that the Bible is a scientific source to draw his insane conclusions from:
Anything the Bible says is right, there is scientific basis for it now.
Since when is a 2,000 year old book written by bronze-age goat herders who didn’t even know where the rain came from or the sun went at night a source of science? Do you know how ridiculous such an assertion is, Mr. Barton? It is especially stupid to cite the Bible as a source when talking about AIDS, which is a disease that wasn’t even around until 1981. I guarantee you, no such illness existed or was even thought of when the Bible was written.
Sit down and shut up, man. Stop pretending that you’re any kind of historian or medical professional, or are in any way knowledgeable on this issue. Further, explain this to me: Why do heterosexual people get AIDS, too? After all, if it was punishment for homosexuality, wouldn’t they be immune?
In fact, HIV infection is a pretty big problem among African-American heterosexual women these days. So, there’s one piece of evidence that completely undermines your theories. Another is the fact that the lowest infection rate is among — gasp! — women who sleep with other women. Explain that one, Mr. Barton. If gay sex was so sinful that there’s a penalty for it, what about lesbians? We seem to be pretty much golden in that arena. In fact, so much so, that the CDC didn’t even bother to put us on their little chart in that link up there.
So, again, you’re full of sh*t. Stop using your bigotry to spread fear and misinformation, Mr. Barton. You’re only hurting your gullible flock of righteous listeners, and making yourself look like a fool to the rest of us.
