Miley Cyrus made waves with an interview and topless pics in Paper Magazine, and, of course, is receiving quite a lot of backlash for it. Among those who are jumping on her is Bristol Palin, who, according to Fox News, is angry about Miley’s comments regarding Christians and Christianity. To be sure, Miley’s comments about her family’s beliefs, and cursing out people who believe fairy tales like the Noah’s Ark story, could be construed as inappropriate, particularly for an interview. However, as Bristol so aptly notes, tolerance is a two-way street:
Is it just me or does it seem more than a little fake that someone claiming to be accepting of everyone and everything would spew such judgment towards her own parents and their deeply held religious beliefs?
She wants everyone else to let her be ‘free to be Miley,’ but seems unwilling to offer the same respect to her parents and those who wish to live out their Christian faith.
Oh, Miley. Thanks for giving us the best example of what ‘tolerance’ looks like in Hollywood: it looks a lot like contempt.
Western Journalism, a conservative rag, said that Bristol “utterly destroy[ed] Miley Cyrus” over her comments about Christianity. That’s not quite true, but that’s pretty much what the entire conservative blogosphere is trumpeting right now. Since tolerance is a two-way street, what about Bristol’s record of tolerance for people not like her?
She, like others on the religious right, attacked President Obama’s shift in position over marriage equality. He had said that part of what brought about the change was his daughters’ friends, some of whom have same-sex parents. It would never occur to either of them that there was something wrong with that. In her blog post about that, Bristol advocated for adhering to the myths that “one man, one woman” has thousands of years of tradition and history, and that we know children grow up better, and stronger, in homes with a mother and father. Neither of these is true.
When it comes to Caitlyn Jenner’s award for courage, Bristol was not only duped by a rumor that one of the runners-up for the award was a double-amputee Iraq war veteran, but she screamed this on her blog:
Did you see this?
ESPN gave a ‘courage award’ to Caitlyn Jenner instead of this amazing veteran amputee.
Isn’t that crazy!!! I hate how everything in this liberal world is, “Oh equality for all, but not if you don’t agree with us!
The religious right is the exact same way, except worse, because they preach hate and oppression. Nobody’s supporting oppressing conservative Christians. We just want them to figure out that they can’t rule the rest of us. To hear them scream, though, one would think they’re treated worse now than the slaves ever were.
Bristol then doubled down on that, strongly defending her stance, and making herself look more stupid than ever. There’s courage of all kinds, but Bristol is another one of those who believes that courage is only applicable in certain circumstances. Obviously, a former athlete announcing who they really are, knowing the vicious hate and threats they will face from people exactly like the Palins for that decision, is not one of them.
There’s a reason people preach tolerance, and then rail against the religious right. It’s because the religious right is about bigotry and hate, and suffers from a severe persecution complex. Is it hypocritical? Perhaps, but it’s also necessary in the ongoing fight for equality. Tolerance is a two-way street, and in her anger, Bristol actually destroyed her own point. She did not “destroy” or “burn” Miley Cyrus. She made herself look like a spoiled, whiny brat who suffers from a severe case of straight, white, conservative Christian privilege.
