Okay, there are just some things you don’t do. As Jim Croce listed them: tug on Superman’s cape, spit into the wind, pull the mask off the ol’ Lone Ranger… and snort coke during a traffic stop. Wait, what? That last item wasn’t in the song but it surely ought to be on any list of things you just do not do.
Another rainy Tuesday night in Seattle. Officer Nic Abts-Olsen notices a car go by without its headlights on. In the rain, at night, no lights, that’s an accident waiting to happen. Officer Abts-Olsen pulls in behind the car and turns on his lights and siren. The car pulls over. The driver, a 73-year-old man, hands Officer Abts-Olsen his license and registration. The officer runs them, sees nothing; this guy has a clean driving record. Officer Abts-Olsen decides to let him off with a warning.
The officer approaches the driver’s window and knocks on it. This startles the driver, causing him to spill the vial of cocaine from which he had been scooping snorts. Officer Abts-Olsen asks,”What are you doing?” To which the driver replies, “Nothing.” “Are you kidding?” the officer ask in disbelief, “You’re about to snort coke on the side of the road?” The driver tries to explain that the white powder is “nothing.” “I’m watching you do it!” says Officer Abts-Olsen. But it’s “nothing,” the driver insists.
Officer Abts-Olsen has no choice but to arrest the driver. But — and one look at his confused face drives this home — he just wants to know:
Why? Why? What would possess you to do that on a traffic stop with a police officer right behind you? I just don’t understand.
The driver replies, “I don’t understand, either.” He notes that he has never had a traffic ticket. “I just saw that,” says Officer Abts-Olsen, noting that he was going to let the driver off with a warning. D’oh!
The best thing, though? It was all caught on the dashcam!
Drive careful out there this holiday season. And if you are ever in any doubt, drugs of any kind at a traffic stop are a terrible idea.
