President Obama went on the Colbert Report Monday night, and in addition to doing an interview with Stephen, as is customary during the show’s traditional interview segments, this show was different: the President decided to take over the show during the first segment. Normally, Colbert will have a section entitled “The Word,” but Obama decided to name it, “The Decree.”
When he first arrived, he declared:
Stephen, you’ve been taking a lot of shots at my job. I’ve decided I’m going to take a shot at yours.
Mr. Colbert was in no position to disagree and decided to get out of the way, to a room full of applause.
The President took the opportunity to talk about himself in the third person, which is admittedly, quite humorous to watch, if not for the material covered, but to see the role reversal of personalities.
President Obama made no secret why he was there, which was to promote more awareness to the impact of ObamaCare on the country, by throwing out these lines:
Young people don’t watch real news shows [or fake ones like Fox]. They watch comedy shows. And, I don’t see the President going on one of those. They are beneath his dignity [sly smile]. Even if he [the President] did get his message across, young people don’t think they need insurance.
Watch Obama take over Stephen Colbert’s job:
The second segment of the show has Stephen interview The President, where they broach on topics such as the midterm elections, the Keystone pipeline, and the new jobs report.
Stephen had this to say about the added jobs to the economy:
I’ll give it to you, Mr. President, you’ve employed a lot of people. Mostly as Secretary of Defense.
The President kept that part of the conversation serious:
That boosted the numbers, a little bit. But, where we haven’t seen enough progress until recently, is wages and incomes going up. However, (the good news is) this last jobs report is indicating some wage growth but we still have work to do.
This is Stephen Colbert’s last week as Comedy Central host to what has been an immensely popular show. Maybe President Obama will decide to take over permanently.
