For a veeeeeeery long time, Disney has been a thorn in the side of the LGBT community. While none of their leading characters have ever hinted at being anything other than a solid heterosexual, several of their villains were distinctly effeminate (think Jafar from Aladdin and Scar from The Lion King) and if The Little Mermaid’s Ursula were anymore butch, she’d have worn a flannel shirt.
But being as this is the 21st century, a lot of people, both gay and straight, think it’s time for Disney to introduce a little rainbow flavor to its movies and who better to start with than Captain America?
Following the social media support of the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag, a fresh trend has been dominating Twitter urging the studio to give Captain America a boyfriend.
The Marvel superhero, whose most recent outing was in his third film Captain America: Civil War, has long been a darling of the LGBT community, with many shipping him with best friend Bucky Barnes.
Yeah, sure, he had a thing with Peggy Carter back in the 40s and now something with her great-niece Sharon, but there’s nothing keeping Cap from swinging his shield both ways. The general consensus seems to be that Cap and Bucky should get their Blitzkrieg on:

While others are hoping for a little Cap on Tony action:

Of course, there’s the usual whining from the homophobic wing that finds all things gay to be totally gay:

SJWs won’t stop until there are no straight relationships in media. They are de-normalizing it. #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend This is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. That shows how weak-minded people are. Does it even matter?

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend is one of the stupidest things I have seen. Don’t worry about ISIS, campaign for fictional characters partners

Yeah, because of course ONE gay superhero would be the end of heterosexual relationships for all time. Seeing Cap kiss a guy would absolutely turn my kids gay and end my marriage to my wife. I mean, how could it not?! Two men kissed!
But back to reality….
The bottom line is that while Disney has made huge strides in presenting women as more than damsels in distress (Mulan and Merida will straight up kick your ass), I just don’t see Disney taking the lead in promoting LGBT equality. It’s one thing to have a Gay pride week at their theme parks, it’s another to have a gay lead character. Then again, with the anti-LGBT movement in America withering away, why not have a gay lead character? Maybe not Captain America, a character already established as heterosexual, but there’s nothing stopping Disney from writing any newly introduced characters as gay. Black Panther? Scarlet Witch? Spider-Man?
What’s the worst that could happen? Some right wing bigots vow to boycott Disney while millions of LGBT kids and teens get to finally see themselves on the big screen? I can think of worse things.
