Marie Holmes of Brunswick County, North Carolina, just found out that she is one of 3 winners in Thursday night’s $564 million Powerball drawing. She is a 26-year-old mother of four who had to quit both of her jobs at Walmart and Mcdonald’s in order to care for her children, one of whom has cerebral palsy. She was unemployed when discovering the good news.
When asked what she is going to do with the money:
First, I am going to pay my tithes (to her church) as I would have none of it if it wasn’t for God.
When the winning numbers were called out she recalls screaming frantically, jumping up and down, and jokingly said:
I scared my kids. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
After paying her church she plans on getting all of the things lottery winners are privy to, such as a nice house and car, but she stressed that she wants to make sure her kids are set up for life.
This is what’s most important to me. Taking care of them. I’ve been struggling since i had them, but i wouldn’t change anything.
I’m ready for it. I’m ready to embrace the change. I’m very grateful for what’s about to happen for my family.
Even though this is a profound, fundamental change in her and her kids’ life, Marie wants her kids to know and understand one day that money isn’t all there is to life.
I just want them to understand that money doesn’t change you. But, it can help you. They don’t have to worry about debt; they can go to college, all on me; and they don’t have to worry about nothing, and I am glad I can do that for them now.
