This is the story that everybody knew was coming: former Subway spokesman and convicted child molester Jared Fogle was reportedly beaten up in prison.
According to TMZ, the incident happened in January, at Colorado’s Englewood Prison, where Fogle is serving a nearly 16-year sentence for possession of child pornography and having sex with minors. According to reports, Fogle’s attacker was a 60-year-old inmate named Steven Nigg, who is serving time at the low-security facility on a weapons charge.
Nigg jumped Fogle while the two were in the prison’s recreation yard. Fogle was left with a swollen, battered face, a bloody nose and scratches on his neck. Nigg apparently injured his hand in the attack, which earned him time in solitary confinement.
Nigg’s family told TMZ that they weren’t surprised at what happened. They say that Nigg has been upset that a number of child predators are locked up at Englewood, and Fogle was reportedly “the last straw.”
This was not Fogle’s first confrontation with another inmate. In Touch reported two weeks ago that Fogle had been repeatedly slapped across the face by another inmate while in the prison’s gym.
While it may come as a surprise to some, many prisoners have a sort of moral “code,” and child molesters usually have a difficult time with prison life. A 2003 report by ABC News called prison a “living hell” for pedophiles. Prison rights activist Leslie Walker told ABC:
[Child sex offenders] are at risk of being murdered, having their food taken, having their cells defecated and urinated in. Their life is truly a living hell.
Corrections officer Lt. Ken Lewis agreed, saying:
Once their crime has become known, they usually don’t make it. There’s a lot of [pedophiles] that can successfully make it … as long as they don’t brag about their offense.
Part of the reason that pedophiles are hated in prison is that a lot of prisoners are themselves parents. Also, some of them were themselves the victims of sexual abuse.
It is not known whether Fogle had talked about his crimes with other inmates. It’s more likely that his notoriety is what earned him the whipping from Nigg.
Reports say that Fogle, whose massive weight loss catapulted him into celebrity status as a spokesman for Subway, is having a tough time adjusting to prison life. In Touch says that a recently released Englewood inmate told them it was not unusual for Fogle to eat an entire box of honey buns in one sitting. He has reportedly already gained 30 pounds in the first three months of his sentence.
It’s going to be a long 16 years for Jared Fogle.
