In the 3rd fatal shooting of a child under 13 in Milwaukee this year, 5 year old Laylah Petersen was fatally shot in a senseless act of violence on Thursday. According to police, the little girl was sitting on her grandfather’s lap inside her home when a bullet came through the wall and struck her in the head. She was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly thereafter.
There appears to be no motive for the shooting. “We believe that this bullet read, ‘To whom it may concern.’ And that concerns all of us, and that should concern everybody in our community,” said police Captain Aaron Rapp at a news conference Friday. “If you saw something, say something. If you hear something, say something.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has issued a reward for $5000 for information in the case and the Milwaukee police are asking for the public’s help identifying the shooter or shooters and attempting to locate any video surveillance that may have captured the crime.
A makeshift memorial of flowers, toys and notes has sprung up at the scene. According to Police Chief Edward Flynn, two children were being raised by their grandparents in the home:
This is a stable, loving, working family in a stable working-class neighborhood where everybody is trying to do the right thing. There is no reason conceivable that I can think of that would explain this wanton, violent act. We are going to find (the shooters). We are going to arrest them. And they are going to jail.

How many more? Seriously. Just how many more times does this need to happen?
