A 26-year-old Oklahoma mother is dead, after being shot in the head by her toddler son.
KJRH in Tulsa says that Christina Engles was pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, after being taken to the hospital in grave condition. Police say that Engles was found by her mother in law, who arrived home to find her shot in the head and lying in the living room floor.
Engles was at home with her three-year-old son and one-year-old daughter. Police say she was changing her daughter’s diaper when her son found a semi-automatic handgun under the couch. Apparently, the gun went off in the toddler’s hand, striking Engles in the head.
According to police Sgt. Dave Walker, the boy was interviewed by child specialists to determine what had happened. According to KJRH, as the toddler was being strapped into the police car, he kept repeating, “mommy shot.”
Engles’ husband, who works as a truck driver, was out of state at the time of the incident. KJRH says that he returned home upon learning of the tragedy. The shooting has been ruled accidental. Sadly, considering the gun was carelessly left under a piece of furniture in a house with young children, this was an accident that was waiting to happen.
