Fetus Murder Charge Shows The Scary Reality Of The Ongoing Assault On Abortion Rights

Recently, women’s health and reproductive rights and services have been under a full-on assault across the nation, particularly in states with GOP-controlled legislatures. They have pushed through things like 20-week abortion bans, and even tried to remove exceptions made in these kinds of legislation for victims of rape and incest. Some even want to ban late-term abortions for abnormal pregnancies that could endanger a woman’s life. These misogynists have even made it so difficult for abortion providers to operate that some women would  have to travel many hours just to exercise their constitutionally protected right to choose what to do with their bodies.

Well, for one unfortunate woman, the scary truth about what will happen if “personhood” bills become law around the nation has become her horrible reality. Twenty-three-year-old Kenlissia Jones of Albany, Georgia was booked into the Doughtery County jail on Saturday after going to the hospital. Her five-month fetus was dead, and police say that she took an “abortion pill.” Apparently, this is against the law in some states, even in a post Roe vs. Wade America.

Authorities have charged Jones with murder over the death of the fetus. According to the District Attorney, the case will be presented to a grand jury, which will make the decision on whether or not to indict Jones with murder charges in the case of the fetus’s death.

This is what happens when we are complacent, people. States like Georgia have extremely restrictive abortion laws, and not doing what the law tells you to do with your own body can land you in jail for 25 years to life. Think about that. You can’t even control your own health anymore in some of these states without facing very serious criminal charges, up to and including murder. Further, this will result in some other very serious and disturbing consequences:

  • Women will no longer feel safe going to a doctor or hospital when pregnant and experiencing complications
  • Women could go to jail for natural miscarriages
  • Women will resort to the back alley chop shops of old that resulted in so many deaths
  • Women and girls will no longer seek reproductive health services, resulting in higher rates of female cancers and other serious health problems
  • Doctors will be forced to let women die while trying to save fetuses

I could go on, but you get the picture. What these people are doing with these is very dangerous to women everywhere. The case of Kenlissa Jones is likely simply the first in a long line of such incidents in fetal “personhood” states where a clump of cells means more to the law than a living, breathing woman and her bodily autonomy.

Hopefully, if the grand jury does indeed indict Ms. Jones, this goes all the way to the Supreme Court and they strike down these “personhood” laws in all 50 states, and once again, uphold a woman’s right to choose.
