Over the years we have gotten used to Republican men saying awful things about rape and abortions. We had Todd Akin tell us that the female body shuts down when a rape is legitimate thereby protecting her from pregnancy. Paul Ryan said rape was just another way of conception; and Republican Richard Mourdock said that babies conceived from rapes are a gift from God. There’s just a whole lot of stupid coming from male members of the GOP, but the women of the party never really say anything as horribly clueless as them. . . until now.
During a Tennessee floor debate about an amendment that would give victims of rape and incest an exemption to a new abortion bill in the state, Republican Rep. Sheila Butt tabled the amendment for the following reason:
This amendment appears political because we understand that in most instances this is not verifiable. Let’s make sure that these women have the information and understanding to act. Madam Speaker, I move this amendment to the table. [Source]
Rape and incest are not easily verifiable — so she wants to put victims through even more hell and force them to wait 48 hours after a counseling session to have an abortion? Rape is the most under-reported crime, because our culture has a disgusting tendency to blame the victims. Cases of incest are reported even less for obvious reasons.
The statement is appalling enough; coming from a woman is downright despicable. It’s ironic that her last name is Butt, because she is certainly an ass.
Instead of allowing a woman who has been brutally victimized to abort the child her attacker impregnated her with as soon as possible, this imbecile wants to victimize women again.
Tennessee Republicans don’t think rape and incest are real, but Jesus totally is. Even though they can’t see him, they know he exists and that’s why the same people voting to victimize rape survivors all over again, voted the Bible in as the official state book.
