Earlier this month Republicans in Arizona decided to show the world how much they love the environment by doing this preemptively banning a ban on plastic bags. Did I say love? I meant hate; they showed the world how much they hate the environment. While cities all across the country ban single-use plastic bags, these idiots decided to do the complete opposite. Republican State Senator Nancy Barto, the bill’s sponsor, said that she wants to protect businesses and the economy from unnecessary regulation:
Excessive regulation on containers creates more work and cost for retailers and other businesses — and leads to higher consumer cost and a drag on economic growth. Municipalities acting on their own to implement these mandates run counter to the state’s goal to overcome Arizona’s sluggish job growth and economic stability. [Source]
We must protect businesses, but never the environment!
Some of you may be asking yourselves why this matters so much? We all use plastic bags and we never give it much thought, right? Hell, I’ve been to a grocery store that doesn’t offer bags and have been totally annoyed because my life just became a little less convenient.
Here are some plastic fun facts that’ll show you how Arizona just screwed the environment:
50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away.
Most of this plastic ends up in landfills and our waterways. There are even plastic islands in the Pacific Ocean, one of them is TWICE the size of Texas.
90 percent of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface is plastic. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile in the ocean.
Plastic takes between 500-1,000 years to degrade.
Plastic chemicals can be absorbed by the body — 93 percent of Americans age six or older test positive for BPA (a plastic chemical).
We only recover about five percent of the plastic we produce.
The average American throws away 185 pounds of plastic every year. You throw away the equivalent of an adult male.
Eight percent of the world’s oil production is used to make plastic.
Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
Plastic in the oceans kills more than one million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals.
We all know Republicans hate science; they don’t believe climate change is real and they apparently think recycling is for hippies. They care more about the bottom line than they do making tiny changes to reduce our ecological footprint. They belong to a party that claims Obama is going to make your great, great, great-grandchildren pay for his policies, while they do everything they can to ensure that your great, great, great-grandchildren won’t have a habitable environment. Seems legit.
