Following up an explosive performance by Beyonce at the Global Citizen Festival, Michelle Obama came onstage to thunderous applause by the crowd. Her visit was to bring awareness to young girls’ education in the world.
Michelle explained the reasons why the issue was so vitally important to all of us, and made a request to everyone watching:
Right now 62 million girls are not in school. These are our girls. they deserve the same chances to get an education as my daughters, your daughters, and all of our children. Giving them that chance is at the core of our work to end global poverty. Its the only way to ensure they can fulfill their potential, provide for their families, and contribute fully to their countries.
I need all of you to join our 62 million girls campaign right now. Tweet or Instagram a photo of yourself using the hashtag #62milliongirls, and I want you to answer this one question. ‘What did I learn in school?’ And then get everyone you know to do the same thing too.
First Lady Obama makes such an important point with this campaign: without a proper and useful education a young girl can’t cultivate a fulfilling life as an adult.
In too many countries, education is out of reach of girls and is sometimes denied to them all together. This is a relic of the past and it must come to an end for the good of the girls, and the good of us all.
