It was just over a year ago when a Michigan couple — Stevie Foehl, a 28-year-old mother of two, and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Michael Emory — was being investigated for an ongoing sexual relationship with a 14-year-old they made contact with on Craigslist. When the police searched the couple’s apartment, they found a computer. And it was on that computer that the police discovered the unspeakable: Videos of both Foehl and Emory having sex with a one year old baby girl they were babysitting for a friend.
The rape may never have been discovered but for the parents of the 14-year-old making a complaint about the sexual crimes committed against their daughter. Before any charges could be brought against Emory or Foehl in the older girl’s sexual assault, the couple moved to South Carolina. Ottawa County Undersheriff John Hess said the investigation began in Ottawa County and it was there that the police discovered the computer.
Hess claimed that seasoned investigators found the video hard to watch. He went on to state:
To a person, this is the worst, one of the worst CSCs they’re had to work.
Following the arrest of the couple in South Carolina, they were extradited back to Michigan to stand trial. In January, the couple pleaded guilty to numerous sex charges and last week, Emory was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences. This past Thursday, Stevie Foehl received life in prison.
Like the investigating officers a year ago, Judge Dennis Lieber parroted the disgust and horror at the crimes he had witnessed:
I don’t know how to quantify the horror this child was put through.
At the sentencing, Emory claimed remorse and apologized but it is unclear whether either Emory or Foehl truly understand the vile nature of the crimes they were convicted of this past week.
WoodTV8 conducted a jail interview in September 2013 with Foehl asking her about the rape of the one year old. While she claimed she was sorry, her responses about herself made the hair on my arms stand up.
I am a great person. And hopefully one day everyone will be able to forgive like some people already have.
When asked about her partner and herself taking turns on the child and videotaping the horrific acts, Foehl responded:
Nothing we did hurt. Nothing we did physically hurt her.
When asked about her boyfriend (who declined to speak with WoodTV8), Foehl indicated:
He’s a great person.
When asked about her possible prison sentence, she responded:
God can only save us.
One life sentence for her—three life sentences for him. I wonder if she still believes in her God. I believe in the Judge. And my heart cries for all the broken victims which include not only the baby, her family, the 14 year old and her parents, but the two young children of the couple committing these heinous acts.
Justice has been served but no one wins.
